In India, il concetto di virtuale era già ben compreso, tanto che lo presentano nel grande poema epico , scritto tra il quattrocento a.c. e il duecento d.c. , Mahābhārata.
Il concetto viene mostrato con un suo significato ben preciso: la realtà virtuale.
Uno spezzone del poema descrive la sensazione della realtà virtuale sotto forma di dono divino ( e infatti per gli antichi cosa potrebbe essere mai?) e lo spezzone è riportato qui sotto:
"Having bowed down to thy father (Veda Vyasa), that (wise and high-souled) son of Parasara, through whose grace, I have obtained excellent and celestial apprehension, sight beyond the range of the visual sense, and hearing, O king, from great distance, knowledge of other people’s hearts and also of the past and the future, a knowledge also of the origin of all persons transgressing the ordinances, the delightful power of coursing through the skies, and untouchableness by weapons in battles, listen to me in detail as I recite the romantic and highly wonderful battle that happened between the Bharatas, a battle that makes one’s hair stand on end"
La persona che sta parlando è Sanjaya, consigliere del re Dhritarashtra, è afferma di aver ottenuto la totale comprensione e visibilità di tutti i dettagli presenti nella battaglia tra Bharatas.
Aveva il dono di vedere posti in cui non è mai stato e sentire i suoni, percepire l'atmosfera di quei luoghi.
Ovvio, la realtà virtuale di oggi non è ancora così evoluta da percepire con i cinque sensi luoghi immaginari come per Sanjaya, ma di sicuro in futuro l'uomo avrà i poteri di Sanjaya senza considerarlo un dono mistico.
